Genital warts are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). They’re caused by a virus known as HPV. Genital warts can be removed using a prescription cream that you apply yourself or by a doctor at an STD clinic. They usually go away on their own after about a year.

At least half of all sexually active adults will be exposed to HPV at some point in their lifetimes. HPV is transmitted through direct contact with infected areas. Warts can occur on the female or male genitalia, in the anal area, or in the mouth and throat.
Only certain types of HPV cause %genital warts%. Even with those types, not everyone who has the virus actually gets warts. Many people are infected with HPV and never show any symptoms at all.
Other types of HPV are linked to cervical cancer. However, the HPV types that cause cervical cancer are different from the types that cause warts. If you have genital warts, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a higher risk for cancer.
If you believe that you may have genital warts, then you should visit an %STD clinic%. If the warts are bothering you, then treatment can help to remove them. There are topical medications available that you apply at home. Your provider can also remove the warts, using a stronger solution, or by freezing or cutting them off.
